Sir John Gordon, the godfather of cloning and Nobel Prize winner in medicine, has died at the age of 92.

His death was confirmed by the Gordon Institute. However, the cause of death was not given. Sir John Gordon was born in Hampshire (UK) in 1933.

A statement issued by the institute, which he co-founded in 1991, said John was a visionary in the field of developmental biology. His work on nuclear transfer in frogs addressed one of the most fundamental questions in biology (whether genetic information is retained or lost during development) and paved the way for revolutionary innovations in biomedical research, from stem cell biology to mouse genetics and IVF.

John Gordon's research showed that the nuclei of adult cells can be reprogrammed to create a new organism. This research turned what was once considered a myth into reality in science.
