Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has arrived in New Delhi on a visit to India.

This is the first official visit to India by a Taliban leader since the Taliban took power in 2021, which is being hailed as a turning point in relations between the two countries.

According to foreign news agencies, the Afghan Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Amir Khan Muttaqi will discuss political, economic, and trade issues with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and other senior officials.

The visit comes at a time when Amir Muttaqi recently attended a regional meeting in Moscow, which was attended by all of Afghanistan's neighbors, including Pakistan, Iran, China, and Central Asian countries.

The joint statement issued after the meeting opposed the establishment of any foreign military bases in the region, which observers saw as a response to US President Donald Trump's desire to regain control of the Bagram military base.

Russia is the only country to have formally recognized the Taliban government. Historically, India and Afghanistan have had cordial relations, but New Delhi closed its embassy in Kabul in 2021 after the US withdrawal and the return of the Taliban. A year later, India re-established a limited diplomatic mission for trade, medical assistance and humanitarian work.

Although India has not yet recognized the Taliban government, diplomatic contacts and practical talks between the two countries are gradually increasing. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Amir Khan Muttaqi's visit was made possible after the temporary relaxation of the travel ban imposed on him by the United Nations Security Council so that he can expand his global outreach.

According to a statement from the Taliban Foreign Ministry, issues related to mutual cooperation, trade, export of dried fruits, health sector facilities, and use of ports will be discussed during the meetings.
