An Italian man who had been living alone on a deserted Mediterranean island for 32 years has died after being reunited with the population.

An elderly man named Morando was known as "Robinson Crusoe" after living alone on an Italian island for 32 years.

Robinson had only returned to the population three years earlier. During this long period of solitary existence on Baddeley Island, Robinson had mastered the art of self-sufficiency.

Robinson was stationed as the primary caretaker on Badelli Island, an old World War II refuge off the Italian island of Sardinia. His boat crashed on the island in 1989 while trying to reach Polynesia.

During his 32 years on the island, he kept the beaches clean and gave briefings to people who came to enjoy the island's ecosystem.

As part of the island's maintenance work, supplies were sent to them periodically. They had also set up a solar power system and heated their home with a simple stove.

But when La Maddalena National Park officials planned to turn the island into an environmental education center, after much deliberation, they were forced to shift to a local one-bedroom apartment.

But after his health deteriorated, he spent some time in a care home in the city of Sassari last summer. He was then transferred to his hometown of Modena, where he eventually died.
