WASHINGTON:

The presidents of the world's two largest powers, the United States and China, discussed various disputes, including Taiwan, TikTok, and trade, in a telephone conversation.

According to a report by the foreign news agency Reuters, newly elected US President Donald Trump spoke by telephone with Chinese President Xi Jinping just days before being sworn in for his second term and despite his announcements to impose tariffs on Chinese products.

The report said that the presidents of the two major powers were satisfied with the contact and Donald Trump called it a very good thing. According to Chinese media, President Xi Jinping said that both Trump and he were hopeful for a positive start to Sino - US relations.

Donald Trump said in a statement released on his social media platform that this call was very good for both China and the United States. I expected that we would solve many problems together and that a start should be made immediately.

He said that we discussed balanced trade, medicines, TikTok and many other issues.

He said that President Xi Jinping and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and secure.

According to China's state media CCTV, President Xi Jinping expressed his reservations about Taiwan, which Beijing claims is its territory, and expressed hope that the United States would act with extreme caution on the issue.

President Xi Jinping said that the Taiwan issue concerns China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity and hopes that US officials will exercise caution.

He said that the US and China may have differences, but they respect each other's core interests and trade relations will be beneficial for both by avoiding tensions and conflicts.

This is the first contact between the leaders of the two countries since Donald Trump's election victory in November last year, and relations between the two countries have been strained in the economic and diplomatic fields.

Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court has ruled to uphold the ban on the Chinese company TikTok, calling it a matter of national security.

It should be remembered that Donald Trump offered cooperation with regard to Taiwan during his first term in office, which included a proposal to regulate arms sales.

Later, during the election campaign last year, Donald Trump said that Taiwan should pay the United States for its defense.

The Republican president-elect has already announced that he will impose a 10% tariff on all goods imported into the United States and a 60% tariff on products coming from China.

Donald Trump said on January 6 that he and Xi Jinping were in contact through representatives and had a positive view of the relationship.
