WASHINGTON:

The US Supreme Court has ruled to uphold the ban on TikTok in the United States, citing national security.

According to a report by the foreign news agency Reuters, the Supreme Court ruled to maintain the ban on TikTok if it is not sold to American citizens, and this decision was made unanimously by 9 judges.

The report stated that TikTok is used by almost half of the US population, but the court has refused to protect this platform.

The decision states that the law passed by Congress does not conflict with the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to freedom of expression.

US Supreme Court justices have upheld a lower court ruling that banned TikTok, ByteDance and other applications, against which users of the said applications had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court.

The court said in its ruling that there is no doubt that TikTok is a comprehensive and unique platform for expression for more than 170 million Americans, which provides citizens with the opportunity to connect, but Congress has deemed its sale necessary to eliminate the threats posed to national security by TikTok.

A statement from the White House indicates that President Joe Biden will not take any action to save TikTok before the Sunday deadline, while President-elect Donald Trump has opposed a TikTok ban and will be sworn in on Monday.

Trump said in a statement on social media regarding the ban that the Supreme Court's decision was expected and everyone should respect it, and that my decision regarding TikTok will not be far off, but I will need time to assess the situation.

Trump said that TikTok and other disputes were discussed during a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
