Two key judges were killed and one of their guards was seriously injured in a shooting inside Iran's Supreme Court.
According to the international news agency, the slain Supreme Court judges have been identified as Mohammad Mugheshi and Ali Razini.
Judge Muhammad Mugheshi was sanctioned by the United States in 2019 and the European Union eight years ago for allegedly conducting unfair trials and imposing harsh sentences.
Similarly, Ali Razini also faced various restrictions and there was a failed attempt to assassinate him in 1999.
Although the motives behind the murder are still unclear, these judges have a reputation for handling sensitive national security cases involving espionage and terrorism.
Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said that the two judges had long been engaged in efforts to combat espionage and terrorism.
The statement said that the cases these judges worked on involved individuals from Israel and the Iranian opposition.
The process of identifying the attacker who killed the two judges and ended his own life is underway.
