Chinese authorities are considering selling TikTok to Elon Musk.

According to Bloomberg, although China prefers to keep the US operations of the video app under the control of its owner, ByteDance, Chinese authorities are considering selling the platform in light of a possible ban on January 19.

Sources speaking to Bloomberg revealed that Chinese officials are discussing TikTok-related plans and how to work with US President-elect Donald Trump in this regard.

Topics discussed include X's acquisition of TikTok and how to conduct business with Chinese authorities, as Donald Trump is expected to add Elon Musk to his administration after he takes office later this month.

Video app TikTok has more than 170 million users in the US, making it an attractive acquisition for X. Elon Musk has also founded the AI company xAI, which could leverage TikTok's data.

Bloomberg also points out that it is unclear whether Elon Musk, TikTok, ByteDance or any officials have finally spoken about such a deal.

Representatives for X have not yet responded to a request for comment, while Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun also declined to comment.
