According to the international news agency, the Swedish Academy said that Laszlo was awarded the prize in recognition of "his powerful literary voice and extraordinary ability to express human experiences through art."
The statement said that Laszlo Krzysztof Nahorkai is among those writers who, even in the most difficult circumstances, present the relationship between man, history, and destiny in an unparalleled manner through the art of writing.
The statement further states that his writings reflect the cultural heritage of Central Europe and the intellectual interaction between East and West.
This is the second time a Hungarian writer has won the Nobel Prize in Literature, following the previous award in 2002 by Hungarian author Imre Kertész.
He was born in the town of Gyula in southeastern Hungary and gained international fame after his first novel was published in 1985.
His first novel, “Satantango,” caused a sensation throughout Europe, including Hungary, and was later turned into a 7-hour film based on the novel.
Laszlo's early writings were about the rural and urban environments of Hungary and Central Europe, but later he also reflected on cultural regions such as China, Japan, and the Far East in his writings.
His intellectual style has been deeply influenced by Eastern philosophy. Several of Laszlo's novels have been adapted into film scripts, with "Satantango" being the most prominent.
His works are described as a fusion of "metafiction" and "philosophical narrative".
According to international critics, Laszlo's name was already considered one of the strongest candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
He was called a "quiet but powerful voice" and a "literary philosopher in a corner."
The official award ceremony will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, in December, where they will be awarded a gold medal, a certificate and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor.
