Scientists in China have created a new type of battery that has the potential to change the way we power everything from our smartphones to electric vehicles.
The prototype, created by a team from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics in Liaoning, is a hydride-ion battery that offers several major advantages over traditional batteries.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries (which rely on a liquid electrolyte), these new devices use hydrogen ions that move through a solid medium.
This battery is lightweight and has the ability to provide energy. However, scientists are still facing difficulties in keeping these batteries stable at normal temperatures.
Which means that hydride-ion batteries only work at high temperatures, making them unsuitable for consumer use.
