Seven courageous journalists who have made sacrifices for press freedom around the world have been nominated for the 2025 'World Press Freedom Heroes Award'.

These nominated journalists include Palestinian martyr Maryam Abu Daqah, who was martyred by the Israeli army on August 25, 2025, in Gaza while carrying out her duties on the battlefield.

A statement issued by the International Press Institute (IPI) said that this honor is being given to journalists who have sacrificed their lives to speak the truth, highlight the facts, and be the voice of the people.

The awards will be presented at a special ceremony on October 24 in the Austrian capital, Vienna, to mark the institution's 75th anniversary.

Palestinian martyred journalist Maryam Abu Daqah and Ukrainian Viktoria Roshchina are both among the brave women who sacrificed their lives in search of truth in war-torn areas. Maryam Abu Daqah’s martyrdom created a new history in Palestinian journalism, where journalists continue to bring the voices of oppressed Palestinians to the world despite the occupation’s Israeli bombardment.

Other nominees for the award include veteran American editor Martin Baron, Peruvian investigative journalist Gustavo Goretti, Hong Kong freedom of expression advocate Jimmy Lai, Ethiopia's Tesfalum Valdis, and other prominent names who have held the flag of truth high in an environment of dictatorship, war, and oppression.

International journalistic circles have called Maryam Abu Daqa's nomination a global recognition of the struggle of Palestinian journalists.
