Senior Hamas leader Osama Hamdan has presented a detailed picture of the provisions of the Gaza peace agreement reached with Egypt and other third parties.
In his latest interview with Al-Arabi TV, Hamdan said that the main goal of this agreement is the complete end of the ongoing aggression on Gaza, and only after that will the prisoner exchange take place, while the international community needs to remain vigilant to ensure compliance with the agreement.
Hamdan made it clear that an important part of the agreement would be the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza City, the northern areas, Rafah and Khan Younis, and that this step would be coordinated with the formal declaration of a ceasefire. According to him, this aspect has also been recognized by the mediators and the first and fundamental clause of the agreement is to ensure the end of the aggression on Gaza.
Regarding the logistical provisions of the agreement, Osama Hamdan said that at least 600 trucks of aid will enter Gaza daily through five border crossings. He stressed that the distribution of aid should be transparent and under the supervision of international institutions, not through local or dubious institutions, so that there is no obstruction or corruption in the distribution process.
Furthermore, he said that there has also been a request to stop drone flights in Gaza's airspace during the transfer of prisoners so that the transfer process can be carried out without fear or danger.
Regarding the prisoner exchange, Osama Hamdan said that under the agreement, about 250 prisoners who have been sentenced to life imprisonment will also be released, as well as the release of about 1,700 other prisoners from Gaza. However, he assured that this prisoner exchange will only be possible when a formal ceasefire is announced, meaning that the release of prisoners is a process immediately after the implementation of the ceasefire.
Hamdan also discussed the role of the mediators in implementing the agreement, saying that the mediators have accepted the responsibility of ensuring compliance with the agreement and that the authority to formally declare a ceasefire has also been delegated to the American side. He said that the international community must keep a close eye on Israel's behavior so that any violation of the agreement can be immediately exposed and action can be taken.
Regarding the administrative affairs of Gaza, Osama Hamdan said that the Palestinian factions have presented a proposed list of forty names for the administration of the Gaza Strip and stressed that the administration of Gaza should be entirely in the hands of Palestinian national representatives, no external or occupying interference will be allowed. He made it clear that whichever party wants to provide public assistance should do so, but it must stay away from profitable scenarios of patronage or political occupation.
Finally, Osama Hamdan said that although he does not trust the occupying forces, he considers the guarantees of the mediators necessary to ensure the implementation of the agreement. He stressed that the first phase of the agreement meets the most basic demand of the Palestinian people, "ending the aggression on Gaza," and it is now the duty of the international community to play a transparent and effective role in implementing this process.
