This shocking incident took place in the French region of Guadeloupe, where a grandfather had himself arrested to meet his grandson.
The 69-year-old grandfather is a former firefighter with no previous criminal record. He robbed a supermarket near a police station. After robbing the supermarket, he waited there until he could be arrested. The goal was to go to prison and visit his imprisoned grandson.
During the robbery, Dada demanded cash and also took a piece of cheese and a bottle of wine. Police later caught him as he was walking towards the parking lot after the robbery, as if he were deliberately intending to be arrested.
The court sentenced Dada to 15 months in prison, five months of which are currently suspended. He will also have to pay compensation to the victims, undergo psychological treatment, and be banned from going near the supermarket.
However, the court recognized his right to legally visit his grandson in the prison's visiting room.
The grandfather has taken this step because he considers the safety and care of his grandson a priority and he was unable to help his grandson through legal means or formal contacts, so he had to take this extraordinary step.
