Washington:

US President-elect Donald Trump has made a significant announcement that he will give the Chinese app TikTok 90 days to avoid a potential ban after taking office on Monday.

"A 90-day extension is a move that is most likely to happen because it is appropriate. If I decide to do it, I will probably announce it on Monday," President Trump said in an interview with the US broadcaster.

TikTok, which is owned by China and popular with about half of Americans, is playing a vital role in driving small businesses and shaping online culture.

However, the US government has expressed national security concerns about this app, which has increased the chances of it being banned.

On Friday, TikTok issued a statement saying it would not shut down in the US until President Joe Biden's administration reassured companies like Apple and Google.

A spokesperson for the app said they would not face enforcement action if the ban goes into effect.

The ban has become more complicated after the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a law passed last year that gave TikTok until today to sever ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or close its U.S. operations.
