The Peshawar High Court has banned the use of mercury (a chemical) for gold mining in Kohat.
A two-member bench of Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Waqar Ahmed heard a petition filed in the Peshawar High Court against the use of mercury (chemical) in gold mining in Kohat. The case was pursued by Noman Mohibullah Kakakhel on behalf of the petitioner, former MPA Amjad Khan Afridi, and others from Kohat. He told the court that mercury (chemical) is used during gold mining in Kohat, the burning of which is not only causing environmental problems but its waste is also dumped in the Indus River, which is also polluting the water while it is also damaging the adjacent agricultural lands.
The petitioner took the stand that the use of this chemical during mining and its dumping is harmful not only to humans but also to animals and plants and is having a negative impact on agricultural lands. It is the responsibility of the government and the relevant institutions to provide a clean environment to all citizens. The use of this chemical is also a violation of the Environmental Protection Act, so its use should be declared illegal and stopped. The court should issue orders to the provincial government and the relevant departments to regulate these things so that their prevention can be possible in the future as well.
After hearing the initial arguments, the Peshawar High Court banned the use of mercury (a chemical) in mining and issued a notice to the officials of the Minerals Department, seeking their response at the next hearing.
